    Strife's PvP essential guide Empty Strife's PvP essential guide

    Post  Strife Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:57 am

    Your loveable leader Strife is here to guide you all in pvp! I'm a pvp enthusiast, my main (the leader char) Hyperion is G6, Rouge is G5, G3 Spitfire, G2 Blademaster, G1 Desperado [the list goes on..] ^^ So i'm organizing a guide on my knowledge to help you all grow to become excellent pvpers!

    Part 1: How not to Die.
    ----------------------------
    Easier said than done. There's general ways to avoid this as such:
    1) use quick rebound! this skill in itself is a strategy, it gives you invulnerability for about three seconds and can be used to avoid enemies on the ground combos and generally get out of danger.

    2) utilize backstep. Backstep takes practice, one needs to get into the habit of using it to properly use it. Although it seems trivial, the step-back gets you out of a danger zone enemies create, its much more efficient than turning around and running!

    3) Super armor. Your enemies all have super armor attacks, and when in doubt everybody spams Z while their being comboed. To save yourself from this try beggining your combo on the y axis, from behind, or use an attack with high hitstun before begging your combo.

    -----------------------------------------------------
    Part 2: How to make the enemy die!
    Dying is easy, make it easier for em!

    1) Combo. Obvious one here, without a combo your chances of victory are reduced greatly. Any form of strategy at all really is a key to victory, just tossing out attacks is ineffective and will get you killed. (Ask me about class specific combos, I know em all)

    2) Hitstun is your friend! Hit-stun is when a character is put into that 'hurt' animation and when they are they cannot fight back or counter you. Certain skills have very high hitstuns which can be utilized to keep the target at bay allowing you to set up a greater combo.
    --------------------------------------------------------
    Part 3: Tactics- Never leave the lobby without em
    Tactics is a broad term so i'll break them down as we go, it refers to your fighting style.

    1) The whiffer: my least favorite style. Often used by slayers, monks and other speed-attacking classes this tactic relies on waiting for the opponent to move, then evading it to follow up with your attack. The whiffer will rarely ever make an attack independently, and will always try to stay close to the opponent. This strategy is a double edged sword, when it works it works but when it doesn't you really end up looking pathetic, because if you fail to catch them on the whiff your closeness sets you up for a combo.

    2) Aggressive: My most frequented attack style. This style revolves around rushing your opponent asap and relentlessly attacking. When correctly used, it gets you a flawless victory, but of course being so aggressive puts you in the enemies direct line of attack. To get the most out of an aggressive style one should begin the match with some sort of ranged attack, then rush the opponent with an approaching move preferably one with super armor. Once your combo is over you should generally stay close enough but out of attacks range to the target, to prevent them from rebounding on you.

    3)Juggler: What i do on my rouge all day. This is one of the most lethal strategies, if you can master juggling the opponent you will literally win without them fighting back. Juggling is keeping the opponent in the air as long as possible, while getting as many combos and hits as possible. This is generally easy to do as many classes have multiple launching skills, the true problems are mastering your juggle timing, since timing is everything with launch skills and utilizing a reset. A reset is a skill that 'resets' the gravity of an opponent via stun, freeze, or shockwave. All of the aforementioned place the target in a standing position (or in shockwaves case bouncing off the floor) which takes the gravity accumulated from taking damage and resets it. Normally when taking damage a certain amount of 'gravity' builds up, this is programmed in game to prevent infinite combos by making one fall to the ground at incredible speed if too much damage is taken, which would end a combo, resets are the answer to this.

    4) On the ground or Wakizase.: The counterpart to the lethal juggler.
    On the ground combos are impossible to stop without using quick rebound. These combos are centered around knocking the opponent down then using attacks that 'scrape' and connect to the target while still on the floor, this effectively keeps the opponent unable to attack much like being airborne. Wakizase is truly an acquired skill, not every class has the right attacks to do it but the ones that can take quite a lot of timing and practice, however the results are incredible damage output in long combos.

    5) Unique: Mix and match strategies, fight your own way!
    there's really no wrong way to do dfo, as such you can utilize any strategy that can work.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    Possibly more to come, its 3 in the morning.

    I certainly fall into the aggressive category for now, I need to remember to back off at times and use backstep/breaking rush. Also need to remember to hotkey them, you recommended that if I recall right Strife?

    As a Silver Moon your mobility is higher than most, and breaking rush is a very great asset. My advice would be put breaking rush on one of the immediate hotkeys to keep track of its cooldown, it gives an invincible frame that can totally avoid an enemy attack. On a thief backstep isn't vital, since you've got breaking rush.

    I forgot to mention i see you still use the f1-f6 keys, In PvP i'd advise customizing them a bit more using letter keys for more fluid combos, once your used to it its quite useful. If you want to know my key setup I can provide

    like F1, F2, F3 etc. and yes, you go to settings->key settings-> scroll around and you'll see where there mapped to. Personally I've messed my keys around a lot. V is my jump, and i've replaced the F-keys as such
    F1-C
    F2-B
    F3-E
    F4-J
    F5-Shift
    F6-still F6 (my awakens there, changed in pvp)

    I jacked my keys up a long time ago

    F1=Q
    F2=W
    F3=E
    F4=Ctrl(L)
    F5=C
    F6=Ctrl(R)
    A=A
    S=S
    D=D
    F=F
    G=G
    H=Alt
    Its quite useful as strife said bcz the keys will be closer to ur fingers instead of having to reach all the way up to tap F keys! lol!

    I've got a pretty good setup now, it's working quite well for Shade but I just have a horrible habit of thinking 'Ok, time for the show stoppers' and reaching for the F keys on Sable lol.

    Reassigned the F Keys to the qwerty set, and relocated particular moves to where I have mobility focused around the X key. I just used T and Y instead of the CTRL's, since T~Y are right above G~H so I can use them to two-step combo's.

    Now to just find a way to relocate Sable's move set to where I can incorporate backstep and not lose a key combo lol.

    Thats a pretty good setup Razz don't worry it becomes natural quickly and as a rouge you don't even need backstep, breaking rush would help greatly and gives invulnerable frames

    haha yeah perhaps, but what if I'm not a class that has access to breaking rush? (taking this opportunity for others who don't have access to that skill). But aye, I need to assign B.Rush in there somewhere ugh..

    Well for PvP let's say, should evasive skills be an essential? Like should Backstep be a default skill, and then classes build off it with their own alternatives (such as thf's Breaking Rush).

    (Trying to broaden the PvP guide hehe)

    More or less yes. Once you get used to reading peoples strategies you'll use things like backstep more situationally, but starting out evasive skills are great to use. Always get used to utilizing quick rebounds invulnerability in particular

    So more or less...

    Super Armor: It's your friend when you can have it. Space attacks that grant it to where it can be active as much as possible

    Evasive Manuevers: If your class grants an evasive technique, take full advantage of it. Try to utilize it in combo's to where it can lead into a new chain while keeping you mobile.

    Pretty much?

    Since fair arena came out I threw away my idea of going a katana zerker for pvp, should I just stick with my zan and its mastery or forsake the loss of power for speed and juggling in the arena?
    I know its more of a preference thing but I'm limited to how many hits I can get before they reach the ground with a zan it seems (plus I'm not that great at pvp >>)

    PvP wise a katana actually is better, since it cools down your physical skills more quickly and is faster, however having both is wise as sometimes when one strategy isn't working the other does

    So one should also weigh out their different weapon choices and advantages those bring them, rather than just going with their staple weapon eh..?

    A weapon might have the best damage but being quicker on the draw would perhaps open more opportunities to chain, and vice versa. (hehe the guide is developing via conversation, I like this >;3)

    agreed,
    cause with speed brings us juggling capabilities more often than not. But its not always what does the trick, in fair arena I usually stick to zan (well not anymore haha) but going against say a rogue or someone who can juggle me - unless they can get a perfect juggle going, due to my armor it does little. So once I hit that ground I rebound and knock out half their life and use diehard if I need.

    I just need to learn now when to juggle and when to...idk what to call it, zan nuke? haha xP

    All these things essentially, to make it simple when one thing isn't working try the other. Say i'm on my blade master, if my strategy with my katana is a complete failure switching to the zanbato gives a different fighting style which will usually put me in favor to win. Its just one of those things that works >Razz

    Approach with upwards or mountainous-> frenzy x combo->upwards->frenzy x-> cancel mountainous-> frenzy x-> cancel bloodlust or raging fury

    or same approach-> frenzy x-> upwards-> blood sword
